With all the cold and snow weather we have been having recently I wanted to make a dish that would warm everyone up. I chose to make coq au vin because it is a hearty winter meal and I also want to learn a bit more french technique. This recipe is a quicker version that only takes 1 hour and 45 mins in total. The meal turned out quite well. However while cooking it you need to consistently taste it to make sure it has enough salt, it is very easy to under season this dish and have it turn out bland. Seared Ahi Tuna with Tamari Butter Sauce

Earlier this year I went down to Richmond, VA to visit my sister. While I was there we went to Edo’s Squid, a hole in the wall restaurant in Richmond. While we were there my sister got an amazing tuna dish and I asked the waitress how they made the sauce that was served with it. This was my attempt at their dish, and from what I can remember it came very close to the one I had in Richmond. To cook the tuna I used the Himalayan salt blocks and seared the tune for a little over a minute a side. To make the Tamari butter sauce I combined butter Tamari soy sauce, lemon juice, and black pepper; then I reduced the sauce and added a bit of flour to thicken it. This sauce is not as salty as soy sauce because the Tamari soy sauce adds a deeper richer flavor that regular soy sauce. I served the tuna over wild rice. Enjoy!

En Su Boca Richmond VA

This past weekend I went down to Richmond Virginia to visit my sister. First I need to say that Richmond is a great food and beer city. There are numerous bars and restaurants with great food and drink. Before going down to Richmond I did some research looking for a few restaurants to check out and I stumbled across En Su Boca, a taqueria and cantina that just opened up a few weeks ago. The name is Spanish for “in your mouth” and pokes fun at the fact that the building that now houses En Su Boca used to be a notorious adult bookstore.

We got to En Su Boca around 1130 for an early lunch. Their menu is simple but the food is high quality and very delicious. My sister and I ordered chicken, carne asada, carnitas, chorizo, and fish tacos. The tacos were incredible. Each one tasted fresh and you could tell that the chefs took their time on constructing the recipe for each taco. My favorite was the carne asada taco followed closely by the fish taco. We also got a side of drunken beans and chips and salsa. The chips came with three different kinds of salsa; a pico de gallo, tomatillo salsa, and a habanero salsa. The habanero salsa had a good sweetness then finished with quite the kick. My favorite salsa was the tomatillo salsa. The service was superb, the wait staff were very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful and answered any questions we had about the menu.

Pimms in London

While I was in London I had my first glass (well it turned into a pitcher) of Pimms and lemonade. Usually when I am in England I am a strict real ale guy. However, it was a nice summer day and I decided it would be a good idea to try a traditional English summer drink. Pimms is a gin based liqueur usually served over ice or with lemonade (not still lemonade, more of a lemon lime soda something along the lines of sprite or seven-up) I was surprised at how much I liked the drink. It was very refreshing and made for a nice break as Gemma and I walked around London. If you are looking for a nice change of pace try a Pimms and lemonade for a refreshing summer drink.

Last Saturday I was out in Philly and found myself at Pat’s Steaks after the bars. I haven’t had a cheese steak in a while and forgot how good they are. Pat’s is my personal favorite out of the big name places in Philly. I highly suggest you stop by and give this classic a try. Can’t go wrong with Wiz Wit.

 

Crab Feast 2013

This past weekend I went down to Baltimore with my roommates from college for our annual crab feast. The past few years we have gone to a crab house but this year we decided to buy the crabs from a seafood market and have them at our buddy’s house. We got the crabs from The Crab Depot, The crabs were steamed perfectly and the crabs were all quite sizable.

To go with the crabs we grilled up some corn and other veggies then put down the newspaper and started the feast. It turned into an epic battle of man versus the sea and lasted over 3 hours. It turned out to be a great weekend full of good food, good beer, lots of beer, and good friends. I can’t wait till next year!

Philly Beer Week 2013

Philly Beer Week starts today and runs through June 9th. During this time you will be able to sample all types of beers at different venues throughout the city and surrounding suburbs. You can find the full schedule for Philly Beer Week Here. I have only lightly glanced over the calender of events but there are a few that I am trying to make. On June 6th at Issac Newton’s in Newtown, PA the is a Founders tap takeover. Founders makes some great brews, two of my favorite are their all day IPA and their Kentucky breakfast stout. As I attend Philly Beer Week events I will write posts about the beers and the breweries. This should be a fun week and I can’t wait to try some new beers.

Jerk Chicken

With all the warm weather we have been having recently, and with my cousin’s Jamaica wedding coming up in two weeks I decided to make Jerk Chicken. The recipe is very simple but for best results does require it to marinate overnight. The Jerk rub is quite spicy but not overpoweringly so. You can use boneless chicken breasts or a full chicken depending on what you feel like using. Enjoy!

Canada Trip Recap Part 2: The Keg Steakhouse and Bar

Our first night in Toronto we stopped for a late dinner at the York Street location of The Keg Steakhouse and Bar. The Keg was your typical higher end steak house and the food was on the same level as a Ruth’s Chris or KC Prime. I ordered the baseball ribeye, my choice was highly influenced by the World Baseball Classic being on one of the televisions. The steak was cooked to perfection and tasted great. What really set The Keg apart for me was the service. We told our server Lisa that this was our first time in Toronto and had just arrived in the city earlier that evening. We asked her to recommend a few places for us to visit and at the end of our dinner she brought out a list of bars, clubs, and other restaurants that she felt we should visit. We made use of this list throughout our stay in Toronto. If you ever find yourself in Toronto and are looking for a good dinner with great service I would highly recommend going to any of The Keg’s locations.

Canada Trip Recap Part 1: Anchor Bar

Last weekend my friends and I took a road trip to Toronto Canada. On the drive up we stopped at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, birthplace of Buffalo wings. The atmosphere of the bar is incredible. The bar is decorated with old license plates and other Americana that gives the bar a home town feel. The waitstaff was very friendly and the service was great. Because buffalo wings were invented here we ordered a bucket of their classic hot wings. The wings were delicious. They were cooked perfectly and the sauce had great flavor and just the right amount of heat. I have wanted to go to this place for a while now and was glad we went out of our way to stop at the Anchor Bar, the birthplace of Buffalo Wings
